Augmented demand calculations

Before upgrading, check the capacity you already have.

Adding a hot tub, EV charger or other equipment does not always mean replacing your electrical service. We assess whether an augmented demand calculation can support your plans using the capacity already available.

For an eligible detached building containing one dwelling, TSBC guidance allows recent utility demand history to inform the calculation. We review the most recent 12 months, account for proposed loads and apply the required demand factors and loading limits. Hourly averaged utility readings require a 25% safety adjustment under the bulletin.

This method is not a blanket exemption. It does not apply to an individual apartment or row-house dwelling supplied by a shared service. The assessment must establish suitability, meet local authority requirements and include the required dated service label. Further load additions require a new 12 months of history.

Bring your utility history, equipment specifications and details of recent electrical changes. Contact us to compare the appropriate options before committing to construction.

Service & panel upgrades in Kamloops

Make room for what comes next.

An EV charger. A hot tub. A renovation that changes how you use your home. Mid City Electric helps Kamloops homeowners and businesses assess electrical service capacity and plan panel replacements or service upgrades around the equipment they actually need.

Start with the whole project: what you use today, what you want to add and what may come later.

A panel replacement is not always a service upgrade.

A panel replacement changes the distribution equipment. A service upgrade changes the supply capacity and may involve additional equipment and utility coordination. More breaker spaces alone do not establish that your property can support a new load.

We review the existing installation and proposed equipment before recommending a scope.

What the assessment considers

We assess existing ratings, electrical demand, installation condition and the equipment you plan to add.

Overhead: supply location, attachment, mast, clearances, trees and access.

Underground: utility connection, cable route, buried services, excavation responsibilities and restoration.

Converting overhead to underground requires utility coordination. We establish the feasible route and define responsibilities before work begins.

Plan the disruption before the work

Discuss access, any power interruption, permit and inspection requirements, utility involvement and coordination with other trades before scheduling. Timing and costs depend on the property and the confirmed scope.

If your business relies on equipment that must remain available, identify it at the first conversation.

Residential capacity: 60A to 400A

We assess existing 60A, 100A and 125A services and plan 200A, 320A and 400A residential upgrades around your equipment, calculated demand and BC Hydro connection requirements.

320A: BC Hydro uses a self-contained metering arrangement with specific equipment and loading limits. This is not interchangeable with a 400A service.

400A: Residential single-phase services over 320A require CT-based metering, with the equipment and location approved for the property.

The right choice starts with a load assessment, utility coordination and the full plan for your home—not the largest number on a panel. Contact us to discuss your upgrade.
